Speaker 1. I live in a house in a village near London. It’s about 90 years old and made of stone. We’ve got a living room, a study, a dining room and a kitchen downstairs. Upstairs there are three bedrooms and two bathrooms – one of them is en suite. I think my favourite room has to be our bedroom – it has a view of the garden and the hills beyond. My husband and I love gardening, so we spend a lot of time outside in the summer.

Speaker 2. My apartment is on the second floor of an old wooden house. It’s pretty big for one person, but that’s good really. It’s got two bedrooms and a very large living room, which is great for me because I travel a lot and bring lots of things home with me. It’s my favourite place in the whole flat. Here I watch TV and listen to music. It’s also where the air-conditioning is – it gets hot in Miami the whole year.

Speaker 3. My mother’s house is in the village of Kardiani and it’s about 100 years old. My family is big – five brothers and sisters and my mother. It was a small house for all of us. It’s got a big living room and two bedrooms. The bathroom was, and still is, outside. It was so cold in winter! Now I live in my own house with my family. It’s a new house, and it’s got lots of space, heating and a large, comfortable bathroom inside. Unfortunately, we haven’t got a very good view.

Speaker 4. My daughter, Eleni, left the island three years ago to find a job. Now she lives in Athens and rents a small flat in one of the suburbs. It’s a good area, but very busy and noisy. She lives alone, but her boyfriend lives nearby. The flat is on the top floor and on a clear day you can see the Acropolis! She hasn’t got air-conditioning, so it’s very hot in summer. That’s why she comes home when she can…

Sarah Murphy has already started doing her Christmas shopping on the Internet. She usually spends about €400 on presents and pays for them on her debit card. The 37-year-old sales manager is buying food and drink from supermarket shopping services and has ordered books and CDs from on-line bookshops. “Buying over the Internet saves me a lot of money,” says Sarah, “and it’s a lot nicer staying at home than having to go out in the High Street. I only buy from well-known companies.” Sarah also likes the fact that she does not have to take her two children, Sally an Lisa, around the supermarket with her. “I sit down in the evening, check the cupboards in the kitchen and prepare my shopping list,” she says. “I very rarely forget things any more.”

Speaker 1.

I live in a house near the sea. It is an old house, about one hundred years old, and it is very small. There are two bed rooms upstairs but there is no bathroom. The bathroom is next to the kitchen and there is a living room where there is a lovely fireplace. There is a garden in front of the house.

Speaker 2.

I’m a student at a school in Cambridge and I’m sixteen years old. I don’t live in Cambridge but in a town just outside. I go to school by bus. I like listening to music and playing football. At weekends I go out with my friends. Sometimes we go to the cinema and sometimes we just go for a walk with my dog.

Speaker 3.

I have twin brothers, Tim and Tom. They are very similar. They have blond hair and blue eyes, and they always wear jeans and T-shirts. They like wearing the same things and they like doing the same things. They both like pop music and they’re crazy about football and computers. They go to a football match every Saturday.

Speaker 4.

I have an aunt. She lives in Australia. She is 80 years old. But she still works. She is an artist. She paints pictures of cats for birthday cards. She loves cats. She has twenty-five. My aunt usually starts work at 7.00 in the morning and finishes at 5.00 in the evening. Then she goes swimming. Last year I went to Australia and stayed with her for two weeks. I had a very good holiday!

Speaker 5.

I come from Poland. I was born in Cracow, but I live in Warsaw. I’m a nurse and work in the hospital in the centre. I can speak Polish, Russian, and a little French. I’m learning English because I need it. I want to travel and perhaps work abroad in future, so English is very important. Next year I’m going to study English in Bristol for a month.

Speaker 6.

I’m from a typical English family. I have got a brother who is 3 years older than me and a sister who is 2 years younger than me. My sister is very naughty and my brother is serious and understanding. My mum is a teacher and my dad is a manager. We are a close family and we get on well with each other.

Bert. This is Amy. She is my sister.

Angie. Oh – elder sister or younger sister?

Bert. Elder. She is 24. She is a teacher, an English teacher. Amy works in a school in the city centre. She is responsible, intelligent and kind.

Angie. Oh! Where does she live?

Bert. In the city centre. She lives with her husband and a baby boy.

Angie. Ah. What’s her baby’s name?

Bert. Brad. He is lovely, funny and curious. I like to play with him and to read books for him. Sometimes he is naughty but we are getting along well.

Angie. Ah.

Bert. And this is Robert. He is my favourite cousin.

Angie. Wow! He is nice! Where does he live?

Bert. He lives in San Francisco. He is a waiter. He works in an Italian restaurant. Besides he is fond of sports. He likes playing football and basketball. In the morning he usually goes jogging.

Angie. Is he married?

Bert. No, no, he is not married. He has got many lovely friends. I like when he comes to see me. We always have a good time.

Angie. How often do you see him?

Bert. I see him every summer.

LOUIS BRAILLE

Louis Braille was the son of a French leather worker. He went blind at the age of three when he fell in his father’s workshop. But Luis was a clever boy. He wanted to be a musician, so he learnt to play the cello, and at the age of ten he won a scholarship to the National Institute for Blind Children in Paris. He could play the cello, but he could not read and write. In 1819 a French soldier, Charles Barbier, invented “night writing”. He used special dots on paper so that soldiers could read at night. Louis Braille understood the importance of this invention for blind people and when he was fifteen, he began to develop it. In 1829 he started to use it at the Institute. By 1832 Braille’ was in use all over the world, but Louis died in 1852 and he never knew of the importance of his invention.

We only eat vegetables and fruit. Sometimes I go out for a meal with my friends. There are a lot of good vegetarian restaurants in Berlin.

Hi, I’m Mitsuo. I’m a businessman and I work with a big company in Tokyo. I usually finish work at seven o’clock in the evening. Then I go out with my friends to a bar near the office. We usually have chickens or fish and we drink beer or some juice. Sometimes we sing “karaoke”. But at weekends I usually visit my parents who live in a small town not far from Tokyo.

Hi, I’m Serena. I’m from Los Angeles. I never have breakfast, because I’m always late for my job. Usually I have a sandwich and a cup of coffee for lunch and sometimes a bottle of Coke. In the evening my mum cooks a big meal – meat and vegetables. But I only eat the meat. At weekends I often go out with my friends. We eat ice-cream and chat.

Hello, my name’s Maurizio Celi. I come from Bologna. A city in the North of Italy. I’m a student at the University of Bologna. I’m studying modern foreign languages – English and Russian. I know a little Spanish. I’m enjoying the course a lot, but it’s hard work. The course started three years ago. After I graduate I’m going to work as a translator.

Hi, My name is Davis Lennart and I’m American. I live in an apartment in San Francisco. I’m thirty-two and married. I’m a journalist and I can speak three languages: English, Arabic and Japanese. I don’t speak Chinese but I want to learn it for my job. I like Japanese and Chinese food. I don’t drink tea or coffee, but I like Coke. On Saturdays I play tennis with my wife, and on Sundays I go to the cinema.

Everyone knows him as Old Arthur. He lives in the middle of a small wood, not far from the village. He visits the village shop twice a week to buy food and sometimes he collects letters and his pension from the post office. A few weeks ago a journalist from the local newspaper took him an interview. This is what he said.

I get up early in the morning with birds. There is a stream not far from my house and I took water from it. It’s good, fresh, clear water, better than you get in the city. Sometimes in winter I have to break ice. I cook simple tasty meal on my stove, mostly meat and potatoes and other things like that. Sometimes I go to the pub and have a drink and chat. But I don’t see many people. I don’t feel very lonely. I know this wood very well. I know all the little birds and animals that live here and they know me. I don’t have much money, but I don’t need much. I think I’m a lucky man, luckier than those people in the city.

I live in North America.We have long, cold winters and short, hot summers. We have a holiday home near the lake, so in summer I go sailing a lot and I play baseball, but in winter I often play ice hockey and go ice-skating. My favourite season is autumn, or fall as we say in North America. I love the colours of the trees – red, gold, orange, yellow and brown.

Speaker 2.

I live in Portugal. People think that it is always warm and sunny in Portugal, but January and February are often cold, wet and grey. I don’t like winter. I usually meet friends in restaurants and bars and we chat. Sometimes we go to a Brazilian bar. I love Brazilian music. But then suddenly it’s summer and at weekends we drive to the beach, sunbathe and go swimming. I love summer.

Speaker 3.

Hi, I come from Russia. Here, in Siberia, the winter is always very long and it’s freezing. It starts to snow in November and the snow doesn’t really disappear until May. The temperature is usually -25 degrees below zero. But sometimes it is even colder and children don’t go to school but their parents still go to work. We wear a lot of warm clothes: socks and boots, sweaters and fur coats.

Hello, I am from Brazil. In January the weather is wonderful in our country. It’s the most perfect time of the year, not too hot, not too cold, but the temperature can change a lot in just one day. It can go from quite chilly to very warm, so you should bring a jacket but you don’t need any warm clothes. You can find here many wonderful beaches.

Speaker 5.

I live in Egypt. It is my native country. It is a very hot country. But it is usually quite mild in January and it doesn’t often rain, so you don’t have to bring warm clothes if you come here. But you will need a light coat or a jumper because it can get cool in the evenings.

Hi, I am from Switzerland. In January Switzerland can be very cold, with lots of snow everywhere, so you must bring lots of warm clothes, coats and woolly hats, and, if you can, snow boots. Many people go skiing in the mountains at the weekends and when you are up so high and the sky is blue, the sun can feel quite hot. You can even sunbathe in January.

Jane. Do you like your city?

Fran. Oh, yes, I feel lucky to be living in a city that is so big and exciting. I love looking out of my apartment window over the high-rise buildings.

Jane. What’s the city centre like?

Fran. So what is it like? Some people say it is too noisy and crowded, but I love that. There’s always something to see and do. We also have the most famous beach in the world – Copacabana beach. Then, on the other side of the city there are beautiful mountains.

Jane. Oh, it’s very exciting! Are the mountains high?

Fran. The highest one is called Corcovado and it has the famous statue of Christ. If you look down at the city from there, the view is spectacular.

Jane. What’s the weather like?

Fran. It’s great most of the time. The only time I don’t like Rio much is the summer. It’s too hot and humid.

Jane. What are the people like?

Fran. They are lovely and friendly.

Danger in the Sea

When people think of dangerous sea animals, they often think of big animals like sharks. However, the sea wasp that lives in tropical waters of Australia is even more dangerous. Since 1980 the sea wasp has killed about 80 people in Australia. These were mostly children. Sharks in Australia have not killed so many people as wasps. The sea wasp is a kind of jellyfish (медуза). Its body can grow bigger than a person’s head and its feelers (щупальце) can be three metres long. These feelers have a poison in them that helps the jellyfish to kill its food. The poison hurts a lot and it is so dangerous it can kill a person in five minutes. Even small sea wasps can kill a child. Everyone comes out of the sea when the sea wasps are in the water. If people have to go in the water for some reason, they must wear clothes. Today we know how to help a person if a sea wasp hurts him, and not many people die any more.

What would I like for my birthday? That’s easy. I’d like to have breakfast in bed with a cup of hot chocolate and with fresh newspapers. I would like to read books and listen to music all day. I would like to have many beautiful and fresh roses all over my flat. And in the evening I’d like to go to the theatre with my friend.

Speaker 2.

Well, I’d like to have a computer, because my computer is so old that the new programs don’t work on it. And then in the evening I’d like to go to a good restaurant. I don’t mind if it’s Italian, French, Chinese, or Indian. Just good food, good music and a lot of fun!

Speaker 3.

I don’t have a mobile phone and all my friends have one, so what I’d really like is my own mobile. They aren’t expensive these days. But it is convenient to chat with a friend at any moment you like. And in the evening, I’d like to go out with all my friends and have a good time!

Speaker 4.

On my birthday I sometimes go out with my friends or go out with my family. My mum usually makes me a birthday cake. But this birthday I want to get a lot of presents and to have a big party with my friends, to dance, to joke and to have a lot of fun.

Speaker 5.

On Christmas I usually go to my parents’ house. We open our presents and have a big lunch. But this Christmas is going to be different. I’m going to visit my friends. In the morning we are going to the forest to make a barbecue and then to go skiing and play snowballs.

I usually hate Sunday evenings because I don’t like Mondays. I do my homework and get ready for school. But this Sunday evening is different. I’m preparing to go on a skiing holiday tomorrow. I’m packing my bag and trying on my ski clothes. I’m enjoying this Sunday evening.

Colin. Well, usually we go on holiday in summer.

Fran. Yes, and we usually go to Spain… but last year…

Colin. …last year we went to Switzerland, and we went there in winter.

Fran. We stayed in a hut and we cooked all our meals there themselves. It was lovely.

Colin. Yes, in Spain we usually stay in a hotel and eat in restaurants.

Fran. It was good to do different things, too. Usually we just go swimming and sit in the sun.

Colin. And I sometimes play golf. I love that!

Fran. Ah, yes! You do. But of course in Switzerland we went ice-skiing every day, and sometimes we went ice-skating in the afternoon – it was great fun.

Colin. And in the evenings we cooked a meal and then played cards. We had a very good time.

Fran. We love holidays. We always have a good time in Spain, too.

Elephants

Elephants are the biggest living land animals today. For a very long time, elephants have helped people. They have carried things, taken people from place to place, and moved huge trees. In wartime they have been used as “living tanks”.

Some people have wrong ideas about animals. They think, for example, that it is not easy to hurt an elephant because it has a thick skin. But this is not true. Though an elephant’s skin is thick, sometimes it is as thick as 2,5 centimeters. A needle pushed into an elephant’s skin will hurt it.

Some people believe that elephants are afraid of mice. This is not true either. In fact they have poor eyesight (зрение) and they usually don’t see a mouse even if one comes near the elephant.

In old Siam, if someone found a white elephant, he gave it to the king because it was unusual. The king had to keep the animal and feed it even though he had no use for it. From this custom we had an expression “a white elephant” which means something that is not useful to us.
